Gonna have to take better pictures later ... But I learned how to make dinosaur hats!! Also bunny or bear or whatever ears. So cute. I also think I could do a dragon one with the ridges and little horns.
I'm going to make these for craft fairs along with my sweaters and stuff. I think people might like them.

Bangkok Breakfast Restaurants: 10Best Restaurant Reviews
While you can always get a great bowl of khao tom Thai rice soup in Bangkok, it’s only in the last 5-6 years that creative western breakfasts have become a fixture and popular amongst both expats, Thais, and visitors. One of the pioneers of creative comfort food and great coffee, Roast is noted for its eggs Benedict and single origin top coffee roasts. Their latest project, Ocken, serves up gourmet brunch, and if you are after a great healthy morning meal, head to the aptly named Brekkie. If you are missing bagels, the Bangkok Bagel Bakery does New York bagels served as sandwiches or with cream cheese smears. Chu specializes in pancakes with imported blueberries and makes the best cup of hot chocolate in town, and the same owners now run the Crackhouse, named for its egg-centric comfort menu. For a really snazzy breakfast, Cafe Tartine focuses on French-styled ‘petit dejeuner.’ Many of these breakfast niches feature nice gardens or cozy furniture, led by the Instagram-darling Bangkok Trading Post in the swank 137 Pillars hotel, but if their menus and surroundings are a bit too highbrow, well we will even point you in the direction of the lunch counter at Took Lae Dee, which serves the good old egg exactly as a good old egg, and has the cheapest breakfast prices in town. With all these options, even the hardiest partiers will now welcome the morning sun.
Rocket has been doing fancy takes on breakfast since before restaurants were doing fancy takes on breakfast in Bangkok, so they know what constitutes a good breakfast. Think elegant touches here, such as herbed omelettes served with Gravlax salmon, and Swedish smorrebrod open sandwiches, or various takes on Benedict like salmon or crabcake. Their rocket fuel signature cold brew coffee is legendary, and the vast menu can handle pretty much breakfast, lunch, or even an afternoon snack if needed. With knowledgeable baristas and a cozy setting, this is a long time favorite.
Recommended for Breakfast because: For a long-running Bangkok gourmet breakfast niche, look to Rocket.
Dave’s expert tip: To get here take the skytrain to Surasak and walk back to Sathorn Soi 12.

Took Lae Dee, while not falling into the same category of elegance as the other places on this list, nevertheless gets a spot here. Took Lae Dee means cheap and good in Thai, and its long food counter, which can be found inside any branch of Foodland supermarkets, has appeared in countless numbers of Thai movies and thus is well known throughout the country. The food is nothing over the top, but its regulars swear by it, and many visitors to Thailand end up spending days and hours here, lingering over the big American breakfasts, consisting of of toast, eggs, bacon, ham, sausages, orange juice and tea or coffee. Think of that local cheap hangout diner back home and you can see why Took Lae Dee is a success, not to mention that you can go shopping in the supermarket while you are there. They also have posted this review up on all their outlet walls, which we certainly get a kick out of!
Recommended for Breakfast because: For cheap and filling, Took Lae Dee is a Bangkok institution!
Dave’s expert tip: There are 9 branches of Took Lae Dee in the 11 Foodlands in Bangkok, a large proportion of tourists seem to frequent the one in Sukhumvit Soi 16 and also Soi 5. From 5-9am, breakfast goes for 49 baht!

This ultra healthy organic cafe and juice bar does brekkie, as the name implies, but also a lot more. They are actually open throughout the day, and do a range of all day breakfasts, sandwiches, and then superfood bowls and quinoa specials for those who really want something healthy. The Spirulina Bowl comes with passion fruit, bananas, and spirulina, blended with fresh raspberries, mango, bee pollen, and chia seeds, while breakfast items include avocado toast and baked eggs with chorizo. If you need your Thai food fix, try a quinoa krapao, where chicken breast is served with holy basil over quinoa. Brekkie also does a range of organic teas and fine coffees, and it’s an intimate spot to chill at, with white walls and soft lighting.
Recommended for Breakfast because: Vegans and health lovers will feel right at home at Brekkie.
Dave’s expert tip: The nearest BTS station is Phrom Phong, and you’ll need a taxi or motorcycle taxi from there, as it is a long walk up the soi.

This longstanding bagel bakery is a downtown fixture, and offers more than just the best bagels in the kingdom. An American and Thai who missed chewy New York bagels opened up this centrally located eatery and now have a legion of faithful followers. As co-owner Eric Seldin stated, “for the longest time we had to do with bagels in Bangkok that were essentially just round pieces of bread.” These days, you can treat yourself to a Lox, Stock, and Bagel, a tuna melt or a Reuben, and plenty of good coffee and desserts to boot. In addition to the bagel fixtures, there are also plenty of excellent sandwiches made with in-house cured and smoked meats. Throw in the free wifi, and you could spend a few hours or more here.
Recommended for Breakfast because: for Bangkok’s best bagels and more, the Bangkok Bagel Bakery is a winner.
Dave’s expert tip: The Bangkok Bagel Bakery is located inside of the Maniya Center, accessed by the BTS Skytrain’s Ploenchit Stati

Roast combines some of the best coffee in Bangkok along with brunch options to die for, featuring hearty fare such as poached eggs with corned beef hash, eggs Benedict with Parma ham, banana stuffed French toast, and the house standouts, which are duck hash browns made with duck, potatoes, carmelized onions, garlic and herbs. For those with a sweet tooth, the strawberry waffles stuffed with vanilla ice cream will guarantee a return visit, and of course this can all be washed down with wildly exotic roasts such as Ethiopian sidamo natural organic or Nicaraguan jinotega. In addition to this eatery at the hip Commons space, Roast has also branched out to the swank EmQuartier Mall, where they have a restaurant on the first floor of the Helix Quartier.
Recommended for Breakfast because: for excellent brunch with the best coffee in town, Roast is it.
Dave’s expert tip: Soi 13 is a bit of a walk from the BTS Skytrain station at Thong Lor, so better to take a taxi up from Sukhumvit. Breakfast/brunch is served here until 530pm.

This elegant urban lifestyle bistro sets the bar for snazzy decor and is Bangkok’s hippest breakfast and brunch niche. Open for all day dining, the Instagram-popular eatery inside the posh 137 Pillars Bangkok hotel features an airy and bright interior with high ceilings,, looking out at verdant gardens, and even a lush outdoor seating area should the weather cooperate, making diners feel far removed from the stresses of chaotic Bangkok. You’re not coming here just to gawk though, as the menu features globally-inspired dishes made with ultra-fresh ingredients that will sate all your breakfast cravings. Dig into eggs Benedict Florentine, Hong Kong congee, avocado toast, or coconut waffles to go with some strong organic coffee. Make sure to save room for dessert as well, as the Baileys cheesecake and tiramisu are superb. Bangkok Trading Post has become so popular that they recently opened another branch in the Mercury Ville mall downtown, but come to this original spot for one relaxing morning.
Recommended for Breakfast because: For Bangkok’s hippest breakfast and brunch niche, you can’t do better than Bangkok Trading Post.
Dave’s expert tip: From Phrom Pong, best to taxi up. Take Sukhumvit Soi 39 up to Phrom Chit Alley (where 39 changes to one way coming at you, and you have to turn left), you’ll find the restaurant in the 137 Pillars Hotel which is just in front of you (to the right of Soi 39).

While Chu has achieved notoriety as Bangkok’s most wicked dessert house, serving up some mean churros and chocolate along with a host of other ultra sweet desserts, it also has emerged with some fantastic breakfast and brunch creations, such as an outstanding Eggs Benedict with Hollandaise sauce and Canadian bacon. They also do homemade pancakes with imported blueberries and strawberries and French toast. Wash all this down with a cup of real hot chocolate, made with 58% cacao French baking chocolate, and guaranteed to put a smile on your face as well as your palate. Keep an eye out for their new opening in a garden house on Sukhumvit Soi 31, as the Covid pandemic has seen them end their stay in the Exchange Tower address.
Recommended for Breakfast because: The real cacao hot chocolate at Chu is well worth the trip.
Dave’s expert tip: Note that Chu has left its longtime location in the Exchange Tower and is awaiting the end of Covid before opening up in a new shop in a garden house on Sukhumvit Soi 31. Check their FB page for the latest.

From Croque Monsieur to baguette sandwiches and build your own salads, the menu is seriously good here, with soups, sandwiches, salads, roast meats, and divine eggs Benedict rounding out the French boulangerie and cafe style menu. Mainly a breakfast, brunch, and lunch spot, Cafe Tartine is also wildly popular for being one of the most family friendly eateries in Bangkok, as they have highchairs for toddlers, plenty of colouring books, crayons, and books for the kids, and even children’s movies playing throughout the day. Additionally, there is a full Kids Menu, a 159 baht deal that comes with a sandwich, drink, and cookies. The portions here aren’t all that big, but where else can you get quiche Lorraine or a brie burger in Bangkok?
Recommended for Breakfast because: For Bangkok’s best French breakfast, Cafe Tartine is tops.
Dave’s expert tip: While they list their address on Wireless, best to take the BTS Skytrain to Ploenchit, walk back a block to Soi Ruamrudee, and walk down it to the restaurant. The cafe is in the Athinee Residence.

Run by the folks behind Roast, one of Bangkok’s best longstanding breakfast eateries and Roots, its earliest and foremost gourmet coffee roasters, Ocken is an eclectic nouvelle eatery that mainly does dinner, but had to be included here for its delicious weekend brunch offerings. While the name Ocken might sound a bit Scandinavian (and certainly goes with the rather Nordic look and feel to the restaurant), it actually comes from something far more mundane. When the founders here put together their first dinner menu, they featured their two favourite foods, octopus and chicken, and thus Ocken was born! Offerings here are pretty diverse, ranging from OcMuffins, which feature English muffins stuffed with a fennel sausage patty, American cheese, and a folded chive omelet, or else omelets with melted brie, in which your standard omelet gets a facelift, adding sautéed kale, mornay sauce, and decadent brie to the mix. There are also Asian dishes like Cheeky Pho Rice, named after the Vietnamese pho and Ocken’s using beef cheeks, and even Middle Eastern spread platters that feature hummus and tzatziki. There is freshly baked bread and pastries, a lovely chocolate mascarpone crepe cake with fresh blackberries, cashew toffee, and hot fudge sauce, and of course the outstanding gourmet coffee from Roots. Set in a stylish space at the foot of the Surasak BTS station, Ocken has become a darling for the hip young Thai food-Instagram crowd, and is a pleasant spot to spend a Saturday or Sunday morning.
Recommended for Breakfast because: For hip brunch creations paired with gourmet coffee, Ocken is a great weekend spot.
Dave’s expert tip: The best way to get here if via the BTS Skytrain. Get off at the Surasak Station on its south side, Ocken is downstairs in the Bhiraj Tower.

While spicy Thai cuisine might be the driving force behind your trip, you’d be hard pressed to turn down a fresh berry pancake with maple butter breakfast. At the Crackhouse (yes you are safe, it’s all about eggs, not drugs!), the same folks behind the long time breakfast favorite CHU, not only elevate pancakes, but they’ve come up with all sorts of egg-centric breakfast and brunch dishes, ranging from a Crack Griddle (featuring an omelette, sausage, and cheddar cheese sandwiched between two pancakes), to a breakfast burrito, and plenty more. Beverages of choice include gourmet coffee and fresh pressed orange juice. Crackhouse also makes life as simple as the comfort food on tap, as they have take out, delivery, and even serve breakfast around the clock. Homesick for some good old diner dishes, then make a beeline for this authentic brekkie niche now!
Recommended for Breakfast because: For truly egg-ceptional breakfasts and major comfort food, head to the Crackhouse!
Dave’s expert tip: To get here, take the BTS to Sala Daeng or the MRT subway to Lumpini and walk over to the Sala Daeng Soi 1 alley.

So, because the booklet from the Junior High limited edition bluray is so small (The “Eren Jaeger Year 1″ Journal shown above), it’s a bit hard to take quality pictures (at least for now, until I can figure out a good way to keep the pages apart without ruining the book). But the Directer’s notes in it are really enjoyable to read, so I thought I would transcribe them in the meantime. I typed the words up verbatim so excuse weird name spellings (yes, they’re in there lol). Hope you enjoy reading these as much as I did! The remaining episode comments are under the cut.
Episode 1: Starting School!
First, the opening song! I’m so very pleased with Revo’s incredible parody song and Mr. Nishio’s wonderful animation. My favorite parts in episode 1 are when Marla says “have a good day” and Marco says “nice to meet you.” I included these bits to show how tremendously different this world is from the world of the original show. Having Thomas get eaten and then spit out was another way of referencing the original show while taking things in a different direction.
Episode 2: Chasing!
Armin and Levi debut in this episode. It was a little greedy of me, but I wanted to introduce the characters sooner than they appear in the manga, so I set the stage for them here. The Levi Squad and the Scout Regiment also make their debut. After the horrible things that happened to them in the main series, we got to see all these members alive, well, and enjoying life. From this fact alone, I feel that this episode justifies the creation of this spinoff series. “Tiger says♪ that the bees ate the bagel ♪”
Episode 3: Dodgeball!
This is Annie’s episode. I feel the manga story is very funny on its own, but I decided to add some parodies to the main series to it. Annie’s reveal was scary before, so for this spinoff I asked for the kind of charming reveal that you’d never see in the main show. I was also amazed by the power of Mr. Sawano’s musical score from the main show. I never would’ve imagined the the power of music could turn a silly game of dodgeball into something so epic!
Episode 4: Cleanup!
A key piece of the “Attack on Titan” puzzle, the omni-directional mobility gear, makes its debut. As the head of the wall cleanup club, it’s quite possible that Rico will get more screen time here than in the main show. I included many other references to the main show, including the way Rico runs, the ODM gear training, and Hannes’ soulful cry. Around this point, I predict that many viewers will begin to see how Bertholdt is portrayed in the spinoff.
Episode 5: Studying Hard!
The papers on the notice board play a small part in this series. In the first five episodes, the board is covered in calligraphy sheets that answer the question, “what is your favorite food?” These are replaced with the students’ portraits in episode 6. Our staff members meticulously assumed each character’s role as they drew these pictures. Also, the school song is displayed next to the clock. It has three full parts to it, so I hope you’ll pause the video and check it out whenever there’s a good shot of it!
Episode 6: Love Letter!
Jean is true to his wants, so I made episode 6 with the idea that in this peaceful world, he’d probably be delusionally fixated on being popular with the girls. I definitely think Jean’s adolescence would be highlighted by thoughts of “does this girl like me? Does that girl like me?” Also, many junior high students these days have an extra circle of cram school friends outside of normal school. As an example of this, Annie studies Titanese at a cram school and even has titan friends. Cram school is really something!
Episode 7: Showdown!
I think every school has its own weird, unique rules concerning upper grades and lower grades that get passed down from one year to the next. These rules lead to confrontations, then reconciliations. I didn’t want to make anyone the “bad guy” in this episode, so I used the idea of those unwritten rules to give the upperclassmen a charming, childish bossiness instead. Oruo’s character fit the bill so incredibly well in this situation!
Episode 8: Spine-chiller!
It took a while, but Erwin finally makes his debut! I feel like this episode has the most successful jokes in this gag anime series. Between things like Frieda’s early introduction, Mr. Isayama’s face, Mikasa’s deadpan narration, and Levi’s -----, there are so many things that deserve a special mention. Personally, though, I really enjoy the role reversal in Ymir and Christa’s relationship. Thanks to her sobbing, Ymir comes across as very endearing and cute in this episode.
Episode 9: Sweet Summer!
I love this episode. All of the misfortune given to Bertholdt in this spinoff was meant for this episode. I’m charmed by Reiner’s misguided love coaching and Bertholdt’s earnest attitude. The fireworks part was an opportunity to add the kind of emotional moment not normally found in this series. I haven’t been told what happens after the current part of the main anime series, but I hope this group finds the love they want.
Episode 10: Recommendation!
Ilse and Marco never interact in the main series, so this episode really highlights what makes the spinoff so unique. I’m so glad that both characters get more to do in “Attack on Titan: Junior High.” Also, I feel that the way Marco never, ever abandons Jean shows that he’s a truly great friend.
Episode 11: Clear and Sunny!
The delightful school festival marks the start of the only two-part story in this series. The story centers on the chee-burg shop and shows all the fun of the school festival in an omnibus-like format.Through his class’ shop, Eren’s beloved chee-burgs become everyone’s beloved chee-burgs. Another key part of the episode was making sure Armin looked cute, but it was Hitch who wound up being far cuter than expected!
Episode 12: Attack!
This episode is a parody of the main anime’s climactic Trost Recovery Operation. I rewatched the main anime series many times to fill this episode with what made it so great. Doing this parody reminded me just how solid the main series was. Every character who’s appeared so far appears in this episode as well. For the band No Name, I of course asked Revo to lend a hand. I think this final episode was the perfect way to close the show.

If you’re reading Wanderlust, chances are you may have thought about going vegan. There are many reasons people choose to do so—involving both health and personal conviction. Being vegan not only means consuming a strictly plant-based diet, but also leading a more moral life—free from the usage of products derived from an animal or their suffering (e.g. leather, animal tested products).
Are you ready for a lifestyle change? Veganism may not be for everyone; every person has different needs, so be sure to consult with your doctor first. It was a big adjustment for me 10 years ago, but now it’s a piece of vegan cake! Here are some helpful tips if you’re interested in giving it a go.
Grocery Shopping
Vegan food is (contrary to popular belief) affordable and abundantly available in every supermarket—providing you know where to look. Browse for the things you like, check to see if they are accidentally vegan, and if not, find an alternative. Pay special attention to the last bolded line that notes what the product “contains;” traditionally, this inclusion on the label is for people who suffer from allergies, but is a good hack if you’re looking for hidden non-vegan ingredients. Obviously if the product contains milk, eggs, or shellfish, it’s a no-go. (Note that you’ll need to read the actual ingredients to see if other animal products like honey or gelatin is contained as they will not be listed as an allergen).
Other ingredients that are not vegan are: Lactic acid (dairy-based, unless noted as plant-based); some refined sugar (sugar may be carbon filtered using bone char… from the bones of animals); L-cysteine (commonly found in bagels and bread, it’s from feathers or hair, animal and human); beeswax/honey (bees are animals too). Many of your favorite grocery staple items are vegan: Whole grain bread, most pastas, rice, soups, sauces, dips, salad dressings. One can easily go unhealthy with the amount of veganized junk food out there. Just because it’s vegan doesn’t mean it’s always good for you. Stick with whole and unprocessed foods as much as possible.
Vegan in Any Restaurant
Yes—you can eat out with your non-vegan friends almost anywhere! When possible, suggest a vegan restaurant, or at least a vegetarian restaurant. Check out the main dish selections on the menu, see if your server would swap the protein or take out the cheese. Find a simple dish to alter, and try to only ask to modify one thing (ie: tofu instead of chicken, olive oil instead of butter). This not only makes it a more doable request, but also respects the chef’s time and effort to prepare. Most restaurants will accommodate your substitution request or will even prepare something that is not on the menu.
If anything, you can make a meal from the appetizers, sides, or salads. Be sure to ask about sauce ingredients as well —or look it up quickly before your server arrives. Be informed before you go, as certain cuisines will use animal ingredients in vegetable dishes. Request the parmesan off your pasta, ask for the fish sauce to not be cooked with your pad thai, and don’t go for that kimchi unless you know it is free of shrimp paste. Important note: Some places will not separate their deep-fryer oils so always check before ordering those delicious fries.
Vegan Baking
Baking is a science. Practice makes progress—as long as you know what ingredients to use. Substitute eggs in a recipe with an “egg replacer” like a mashed banana/tofu or dissolved flaxseed powder. Additionally, a variety of vegan egg powder products are on the market now. Instead of lard or butter use vegan butter or applesauce. Vegan cheeses have come such a long way with chewier consistencies when melted. There are plenty of non-dairy milks out in the world now, try experimenting with Almond, Rice, Oat or Coconut. The avocado has now made its way into many recipes due to its smooth consistency.
Many of your favorite baked goods can be veganized with some minor tweaks. Though beware that modifying your best non-vegan cake recipe may also come with feelings of wanting to compare the final product to the original! Much of the food we loved comes with our emotional attachment to it: Its exact taste, how it made us feel, our first experience with it and with whom. Know that your vegan version may come out differently and accept your new creation. Reevaluating the relationship you have with food can help you reconcile the changes you want to make. Continue to cherish your memories and pave the compassionate way for new ones.

Packing for Work Lunch
Eating out can be costly—vegan or not. Save money and make your own meals. I use a portable lunch box-sized insulated tote to carry all the things. When prepping, ensure each meal has a 1/3 ratio of protein, veggies and grains. These ratios can also change if you are wanting a specific diet like low carb, but make sure to vary it up in each meal. If you like to cook dinner, reserve half for lunch the next day. Cook pastas, couscous, or grains with a vegan protein and vegetable side. Some packable vegan protein options are: cooked beans/edamame with seaweed, soy patties, fried seitan (wheat gluten).
My favorite vegetable sides are: sauteed kale and corn, a whole boiled or baked sweet potato, or stir-fried garlicky string beans. If cooking is not an option, bring items you can assemble at work such as a pita or multigrain bread with a veggie burger, falafel, tofu, hummus and carrots, chips, or salad. Use a reusable container to pack the grains with the protein and sides, and another container for bread, raw salad, vegetables, and fruit. Remember to have a multivitamin handy for after (if your biggest meal is lunch). Bring a bag of nuts and kombucha and you’re good to go!
It’s easier than you think to go vegan. It can be gradual: Try one meal a week to start. Change can happen with a shift in perspective. Think about where your food is coming from before the next bite. Take time to cultivate an awareness of how the food you consume affects your body and mind. Chew, swallow, then pause a moment to appreciate the nourishment you are receiving. Notice how it flows into you, how you feel minutes later.
Go forth young vegan—and arm yourself with your reusable tote and Wander Without Waste kit. Good luck out there, find your way!

25 Lessons from Age 25
1. HOME IS A VIBE
Throughout my whole life, I always thought home was a place. A city, a state, four walls and a hard-wood floor. I don’t believe this anymore. With my family and friends spread out across the country like a cream-cheesed bagel, I realized now that home is as much everywhere as it is nowhere. It’s in the memories and the songs and the thoughts that race through my mind as I fall asleep. Ain’t no place like it.
2. SUMMER IN THE SOUTH IS LIKE WINTER IN THE MIDWEST
It’s the kind of lock-yourself-in-and-binge-watch weather that I though only existed in the dark days of Midwest winter. Except in the South, an Irish Coffee does not soften the blow. No liquor nor liquid can save you from this wet heat. It’s like being trapped inside of a beached whale. Just embrace the sweat. Just breathe. It’s the price one pays for 70 and sunny in December.
3. THE SOPRANOS IS THE GREATEST SHOW OF ALL TIME
I don’t know why it took me so long to press play on episode one. Probably some combination of fears. The fear that one cultural phenomenon from the early 2000’s could never live up to the hype. The fear that 7 seasons might as well be considered a hobby. In any case, the fear wasn’t warranted. The character depth on this show could home a giant squid. It’s simply the best.
4. NFL KICKERS ARE VALUABLE
Every August, I offer up my emotional wellbeing to the 53-man roster of the San Diego Chargers. And every year, they find an innovative way to lose games – spiraling me into a fit of heated disappointment for 2-3 subsequent days. This year, my anguish was at the feet of 5 incompetent kickers. Never in my life have I seen so many different people do equally shitty at the same job. 9-7 could have been so much more.
5. TALES FROM THE CRYPT
I don’t really know what crypto currency is and I don’t really care to do the research. All I know is that my roommates convinced me to buy some. Now, on a daily basis, I’ve either lost everything or I’ve exponentially multiplied my money. It’s a great way to inject some crippling fear into your otherwise stable life.
6. I CAN ROUGH IT
We were warned that humans should not go to the Appalachian Mountains in such hazardous winter conditions. “That’s cute,” they said. “I love camping and I would never do that,” they said. I laughed this off as I soaked up the rays of the mountain sun. At the tender hour of 6 PM, I knew they were right. Never in my life have I been so cold, but I survived the night.
7. THE GRIND IS REAL
My dentist recently told me that I grind my teeth when I sleep. I didn’t really believe him until my first night with a sleep-in mouth guard. I woke myself up 3 times from chomping down on that bad boy like corn on the cob. Touché mister dentist…touché.
8. HOW TO EAT CRAWFISH
It’s way harder than it fuckin looks, and everyone has a style that they think is right. The most effective way for me: Rip off that head, slurp the juices, crunch the sides of the tail lightly, peel back the shell, and eat the meat. Repeat until you are disgusted with yourself.
9. DON’T SKIMP ON THE FISH BOWL CONDITIONER
Instead of running out to PETCO to grab another bottle of water conditioner, I thought I could stretch out the last remaining bit among two bowls and re-up for the next round. The next morning, I found both of my Beta fish (Pepperjelly and Kyrie) dead at the bottom of their tanks. The scene will stick with me until I too am dead. I’m so so sorry guys.
10. KEEP IT SALTY
The easiest way to turn your body into Gumby and your brain into gum balls is through a hot epsom salt bath. I don’t know what they put in that stuff, but I am hooked. You ladies had this shit down a long time ago and I applaud you for it.
11. HOW TO FLY ON AN AIRPLANE
I flew on more planes this past year than I did the 24 years prior combined. With lots of practice, you learn little things that assist on the journey. Firstly, download your Spotify playlists before the flight so you can listen in the sky. Secondly, use the debit card with the bad strip and they will give you your Gin & Tonic for free to avoid holding up the line.
12. HOW TO MAKE A GOOD GIN & TONIC
I had a new-found love and appreciation for this drink in 2017. It’s sharp, yet refreshing. Sophisticated, yet simple. Just a damn good drink for the night time hours. Pour 2 shots gin and 2 ½ shots tonic over a ¾ full glass of ice cubes. Top with a one-second squirt of lime juice. Stir and drink with a colorful bendy straw. Add a splash of orange or cranberry juice if you are feeling “tropical.” Enjoy.
13. THE RAPPER’S WRITING PROCESS
There’s something magical about the driver’s seat that I just can’t get from sitting down at a desk. As much as I like to write, I’ve never written a song on paper. I start with a line in my head and say it out loud and build it bit by bit, so by the time it’s done I already have it memorized. With the beats blasting, I can write and recite over and over until it’s polished. Sometimes at night I drive up and down the same strip of Canal St. while I work on a song. I probably look like a drunkard, but process is process.
14. KENDRICK LAMAR HAS MY BACK
DAMN. came out about one week before I moved from Omaha to New Orleans, and it served as the soundtrack to my re-location. It was the sound of a transition of styles. Something new, scary, and exciting. Fast forward six months, and I’m feeling lost. I see Kendrick live on stage at Voodoo Fest, surrounded by thousands of people chanting “We gon’ be alright!” in unison. His presence alone feels like some sort of divine intervention. He was my support system throughout this whole thing.
15. BEWARE THE SPICY SALADS
I learned this lesson twice at 25. The first time was a pre-packaged Cajun salad at Louis Armstrong Intl. Airport in New Orleans. The pink dressing made my eyes water and I was completely taken off guard. It was a good burn. The second time was at the Chili’s in the Dallas Fort-Worth Airport. Their chipotle ranch dressing was spicy on a practical joke kind of level. When the waiter asked if I wanted more dressing we both laughed in a “fuckin good one” kind of way. My subsequent flight was the worst of my life.
16. I CAN ROCK A CAP
I always thought that my head was too small or misshapen for hats. I experimented at age 15 and hated the results. Since then, I have largely avoided the idea altogether. One Autumn day, I tried on a random hat hanging on the coatrack and my whole view changed. My head was made for the so-called “dad cap.” My hair might not last forever, but a new door has been opened when it comes to cranial decorations.
17. DON’T BET ON THE SPREAD
You might as well buy something instead of just throwing your money away on sports betting. “Oh, Creighton is a 9-point underdog to Gonzaga?! This is too good to be true!” Creighton lost by 17 and this was the first and last time I will bet on a sporting event. Even at the casino, you play games and get free drinks. Sports betting is a hot date that never shows up to the restaurant. Enjoy that cold dinner alone, Tyler. You deserve it.
18. CLOTHES STEAMER > CLOTHES IRON
Light, compact, effective, and efficient. I don’t know how I got by without one of these gizmos before. Just put that shirt on a hanger and blast away with some steam. It’s almost too easy. Word of caution: DO NOT use the clothes steamer while you are wearing the clothes. I did this and got a Burger King looking grill mark burn on my chest for about a week.
19. I HAVE A THING FOR FRENCH GIRLS
Namely, French girl singers of the 1960s. France Gall, Brigitte Bardot, Françoise Hardy, and the like. I have no idea what they are saying in their joyous tunes, but it’s so buttery that I don’t care. I feel like I understand it nonetheless. I also met Marion this year, a real-life lady from France. She loved to dance and I will miss her.
20. ALONE TIME IS A GIFT
I took this for granted when I had my own apartment with just me and my cat Pancake. I could do whatever I wanted whenever I wanted and got very little pushback on my lifestyle choices. If I cleaned up, it stayed clean unless I made a mess. If I wanted to sleep in, I slept in. It was simple. Now, with two roommates, I’ve learned to cherish the time I get alone. You never know how long it will last.
21. I CAN FINISH AN AUDIOBOOK
It’s always been difficult for me to read an entire book. I get bored, my eyes get tired, and after a while, I’m just reading words while thinking about food or when I fucked up “memorable” in the 5th grade spelling bee. “M-O-M...do I have to finish?” My love of podcasts has been around since my late teens, so it seems pretty obvious that audiobooks might be a good way to absorb some literature. Obvious or not, it took me several years to figure that out. I’m very happy to have gained valuable insights from Chuck Klosterman, Malcolm Gladwell, Tina Fey, and others this past year.
22. THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF POOLS
Back in Nebraska, I knew of three types: home, public, and country club. I figured that this was just how pools worked in the United States. I was wrong. There are all sorts of weird pools. Swanky rooftop pools with all attractive people and $15 drinks. Tiny park pools that look like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater creations. And then there is The Drifter. A pool for the punk scene where tops are optional. What a world we live in.
23. AMAZON PRIME IS AN INCREDIBLE DEAL
I had my entire living arrangement shipped for free to my doorstep in 2 days. Bed and desk and chairs - everything. The works. If it can be bought, you can buy it on Amazon. On top of that, you can watch Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle, and One Mississippi. If that’s not worth $100, I don’t know what is.
24. TALKSPACE THERAPY IS MY SHIT
Thank you for everything Jenise!
25. YOU CAN MAKE NEW FRIENDS, BUT YOU CAN NEVER REPLACE YOUR HOMIES
You know who you are. You know all of the dumb shit we’ve done. You were there through all of the bad breakups and shakeups and opportunities to eat chicken wings. It has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. I love you guys and gals to death.
